What Is Image Resolution?
SnapReduce Technical TeamPublished 2026-09-275 min read
We hear the word 'resolution' constantly: 4K resolution, high-resolution cameras, 300 DPI resolution. But what does image resolution actually mean, and how does it determine image sharpness?
Table of Contents
Pixel Dimensions (Width × Height)
At its core, digital resolution is the total number of pixels along an image's width and height. An image measuring 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high contains 2,073,600 total pixels.
What Are Megapixels?
One megapixel equals one million pixels. A 12MP camera captures photos with 12 million individual pixel sensors (e.g. 4000 × 3000 pixels).
Screen Resolution vs Print Resolution
On computer monitors, image size is defined solely by pixels. On physical paper, resolution is defined by how tightly those pixels are packed together (Dots Per Inch - DPI).

Questions & Answers
Does higher resolution always mean better photo quality?
Not necessarily. Sensor size, optical lens clarity, and exposure lighting matter far more than raw megapixel count.
